Branch Mission Statement:

The IDA Branch promotes and disseminates researched-based knowledge for early identification, effective teaching approaches and intervention strategies for dyslexics.

Purpose:

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals with dyslexia, their families and the communities that support them. IDA is the oldest learning disabilities organization in the nation – founded in 1949 in memory of Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a distinguished neurologist. Throughout our rich history, our goal has been to provide the most comprehensive forum for parents, educators, and researchers to share their experiences, methods, and knowledge.

History of Branch:

The Branch has been in existence since 1971. Over the years we have worked consistently to help and support families, teachers and students who have dyslexia and other associated language difficulties. Since 1984 we have held an annual conference and also organized Orton-Gillingham teacher training. This is a phonetic rule-based, structured and multisensory method for teaching reading, spelling and language skills. Scientific research has shown that students who have language difficulties learn best when taught by this type of approach.
